DoD manages about 300,000 buildings on some 500 installations around the globe. As the nation’s largest single energy consumer, DoD spends close to $4 billion every year on facility energy consumption. Of that total, 95 percent is spent to power, heat, and cool buildings, and 5 percent is spent to supply fuel to the fleet of non-tactical vehicles. Improving the energy and water efficiency of these buildings can reduce operating costs, improve occupant comfort and productivity, and make our installations more resilient to the effects of climate change. To realize these outcomes, ESTCP is demonstrating and validating new technologies and solutions to improve component and system efficiency, energy management and control, and facility planning and design.
