Several commercial PFAS-free firefighting formulations are being tested at 28-, 50-, and 400- square-foot pan fires. Foam quality is one factor of interest and is being addressed with aspirated nozzles and with compressed air or ultra-high-pressure nozzles. Beyond these qualification tests are the large-scale scenario tests in which 400 or 1,000 gallons of fuel is ignited on an unconfined platform or on a simulated debris field simulating an aircraft crash on or near a runway. These tests provide a realistic evaluation of PFAS-free formulations and will guide further improvements in performance. The data derived from these tests have informed the development of alternative military specifications and will also inform firefighting training with a better understanding of foam stability and improved application procedures.
